Consisting of letter, 8 Sept. 1867, Yorkville, S.C., to [Capt. Mims] Walker, [Uniontown, Perry County, Ala.], re the involvement of freedmen in Reconstruction politics and the potential for a race war, "There will always be... designing white men enough among us to excite dissensions and atagonisms between the races," and fearing that "the country cannot escape a servile war..." Letter, 16 Feb. 1896 (Bartow Fla.), "South Florida Military and Educational Institute," to Rob[er]t Coster, New York, requesting that he return Law's [Civil War] papers instead of selling them and mentioning letters of [Jubal A.] Early, [Robert E.] Lee, and [P.G.T.] Beauregard, "I am not as much in need of funds as when I... propos[ed] to dispose of [them]... Many... I would prefer to keep."
